美国生物学家爱德华·刘易斯为了弄清生物的体型结构与基因之间的关系，进行了几十年的研究，证实生物体从单个受精细胞开始，要发展成为含有数以亿计的特化细胞的躯体，从蝇、蛙到人的动物都拥有几乎相同的一套基因。

这套基因是动物形态蓝图的设计师，它行使一个主控制功能去引导动物的生长发育过程。在胚胎生长过程中，每个细胞中的各种基因的开和关造成了细胞的特别功能。例如，产生眼球晶状体蛋白的基因，只是在形成眼睛的细胞中才有活性，而创造脚指甲蛋白的基因，即使它们都出现于同一个细胞中，却不会被表达。
