克丽奥佩特拉生于公元前69年，是亚历山大大帝征服埃及后托勒密王朝册封的君主之一。她的父亲托勒密十二世，指定他的长子托勒密和她共同执政，统治埃及。公元前51年，克丽奥佩特拉登上王位。克丽奥佩特拉在古埃及无疑是一位焦点人物，在后人的记述里，这位埃及绝世佳人凭借其倾国倾城的姿色，不但暂时保全了一个王朝，而且使强大的罗马帝国的君王纷纷拜倒在其石榴裙下，心甘情愿地为其效劳卖命。但丁、莎士比亚等都将这位传奇女人描述为“旷世的性感妖妇”；而萧伯纳也称她为“一个任性而不专情的女性”。
