雕刻大石像用的Rano火山石是黑灰色的石灰岩，石质结构比较松。在山坡上经常能看到一些更加坚硬石头的碎片，与这座火山的石头完全不同，显然来自岛上其他的火山，据Christ介绍说，当时的岛民就是用这样的坚硬的石头制作的刀斧刻制了大石像。在博物馆里看到用这样的锋利石头制成的、有木柄的斧头和刀具。
