联合国宣布2009年为国际天文年，而2009年也是伽利略利用天文望远镜进行观测的400周年纪念。1609年，伽利略将望远镜第一次指向天空，这个开创性的伟大发现所触发的科技变革深深地影响并改变了我们的世界观。到现在，在地面和空间中的望远镜能够对宇宙进行一天24小时不间断的全波段探测。以下是美国《大众机械》杂志盘点的世界功能最强5大天文望远镜。

凯克望远镜

凯克望远镜于1993年投入运行，位于夏威夷莫纳克亚山山顶上，隶属于美国加州理工学院和加州大学。凯克望远镜事实上是双子望远镜，分别为凯克I和凯克II。每个望远镜口径为10米。凯克望远镜最早建于20世纪90年代，是当时世界上口径最大的望远镜。凯克望远镜先进的适应性光学镜头为后来的计算机驱动镜头的出现打下了基础。由于望远镜的口径不可能无限扩大，最切实可行的办法就是用一些小镜片组合成一台大口径的望远镜。凯克望远镜最关键的改革就是采用了这种系统，它的主镜片由36块口径为1.8米的六角形小镜片组成，组合后的效果相当于一架口径10米的反射望远镜。

凯克望远镜开创了基于地面的望远镜的新时代。它的规模是美国加利福尼亚州帕落马山上的海耳望远镜的两倍，后者在建成后几十年内是世界上最大的望远镜。有人曾认为制造如此之大的望远镜是不可能的，但新科学技术把不可能变为了现实。
