    斑驴（1883年灭绝）
    
    据说斑驴“quagga”这个名字源自Khoikhoi语的斑马，取谐音而来。这是非洲曾经拥有的最著名生物，斑马的一个亚种，曾经在南非的Cape Province和Orange Free State的南部大量出现，由于身体斑纹的特殊性而很容易和斑马区分开来：头部和颈部具斑马条纹，到了身体中央斑纹逐渐退却，颜色同时变深，臀部已经完全没有斑纹。
    
    1788年，斑驴被正式列入马属的一个亚种，但是从那时到之后的几十年中，动物分类学专家们很难说清楚斑马和斑驴哪个是亚种，哪个是自然条件下产生的原始种，甚至就连斑马种内两匹马之间的斑纹也很多各不相同，所以它们之间的区分一度很混乱。在它们之间的种属被严格区分之前，人类就开始了大肆的屠杀这种奇异的动物，为了食肉，或者毛皮，或者纯粹为了打猎的乐趣。最后一匹野生的斑驴死于上世纪70年代，而人工驯养的最后一匹斑驴也在1883年的8月12日也在阿姆斯特丹的一所动物园内停止了呼吸。至此，分类变得没有太大意义，人类只能在标本馆或者图片中看到这种动物。
